Big or Small, Fence for Them All!

Adapting standard DOT wildlife fencing to better protect people and wildlife.

Catch up with our FREE webinar to learn how you can easily adapt roadside barriers to help improve wildlife connectivity and reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions for people and a wide range of animals.

We have prepared a special wildlife fencing specification guide that shows how various roadside barriers can be easily adapted to reduce wildlife-vehicle collisions (WVC) and improve habitat connectivity.

These specifications are “ready-to-go” and can be used in any project report, permit, tender or onsite instructional documents.

The Amphibian and Reptile Conservancy do incredible work across the United States. As reptile and amphibians  are at significant risk to roadkill we want to help support ARC mitigate the negative impacts of roads on populations across the country.

Your questions answered...

How durable is High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE)?

The typical benchmark life for HDPE is 50 years. Animex AMX-T, AMX-SP and AMX-HD products are all made from recycled milk cartons and combined with carbon (a component found in tyres) to give the fencing a long life span and extended protection from UV degradation and other climatic factors including temperature and snow loading. Black is our standard color as it has the longest lifespan although we can produce material in any colour. We also have a range of metal products (AMX-XP) but our standard HDPE range is the most popular for its cost and longevity.

How do you deal with water and drainage through solid fencing?

All Animex products can be supplied with pre-perforated drainage holes that prove a flow rate of 15 gal/sqft/min as a standard. If increased water flow is needed, many options are available that incorporate standard drainage components to allow the free flow of water to limit the movement of animals. Don't hesitate to contact us to discuss what may be best for your project.

What maintenance considerations are needed for solid barriers?

Typically, solid barriers require less maintenance than mesh products as vegetation does not grow through and can become entangled in solid barriers. All Animex products withstand the impact of weed whacker wire, but care should always be taken when using a mover near any fence. Annual walkovers and general repairs are needed like with any fence but using a durable material will help to reduce repairs significantly. More details regarding maintenance can be found in The Wildlife Fencing Guide.

Will Animex be used on the Los Angeles Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing project?

We are unaware of what fencing is being planned to be used on this project but are keen to find out. This webinar aimed to highlight the benefits of adapting standard DOT wildlife fencing to help a wide range of animals on any project. We hope what we have shown will help DOTs and associated agencies to re-think how they approach and design fencing for projects aimed at protecting people and wildlife on roads.

Any wildlife crossing/connectivity project needs to incorporate fencing to help guide the movement of animals. Without it, the frequency of the crossing being used by animals will be greatly reduced.
