Janelle Chojnacki

Whilst studying at Humbold State university Janelle has been studying common ravens and has a long term interest in wildlife management and wildlife conscious farming. She has also spent time as an instructor for Cal Poly Humboldt’s Conclave Course and is excited to share and see all the research that will be featured at the conference.

What are you hoping to gain from the conference?

I will be presenting preliminary results from my graduate work tracking Common ravens and I’m looking forward to the experience of discussing this project with a scientific audience (although the idea of condensing a project I’ve been working on for 2+ years into a 15-minute presentation is mind-boggling!). I also hope to connect with other students and professionals, to re-connect with folks I’ve met previously, and to learn about taxa I don’t have a lot of experience in yet.

Which program topics or sessions are you most looking forward to?

Last semester I was an instructor for Cal Poly Humboldt’s Conclave course so I’m really looking forward to watching those students compete in another Quiz Bowl! The poster session and general networking sessions are also a lot of fun and I’m  excited to meet other students, researchers, and professionals in fields both related and quite different from mine. I’m excited to learn more about the management issues around species with which I’m not too familiar, and I’m looking forward to other posters/talks concerning raven management.

What else does 2022 have in store for you?

2023 is definitely going to be a big year – I plan on defending my thesis this fall and will work on a couple publications before then. I’m involved in a few other research projects studying ravens in the Mojave and developing a wildlife-conscious certification program for cannabis farms, so I’m excited for that research to continue and to keep working on applied conservation in a variety of ways.
